While this technology can be applied to benefit most every area of medicine, it is necessary to focus on key areas to maintain efficient utilization of both intellectual and financial resources. The cardiovascular field has been identified as a major area of application, given the needs in this area and its widespread impact on today's population. Integrated circuits on microscopic spheres for medical purposes, or MedBalls, can be used for a vast number of applications. Their characteristic of being able to wirelessly communicate environmental conditions from inside the body, whether ingested or implanted, can make acquisition of vital statistics convenient and automatic, and provide information for diagnosis and treatment of pathological conditions.
